Izki Golf

In 1994, the Provincial council of Alava created the Izki golf complex, which comprises the 18-hole Urturi course.

Location This region, nestling among small valleys and mountanis, is strategically placed between a number of important towns and cities. Vitoria-Gasteiz, capital of the Basque country, is just 30 minutes away. Logroño, capital of La Rioja, is also just half an hour away and other cities such as Pamplona, Bilbao and San Sebastian are all within an hour’s drive.

Urturi golf course The Urturi golf course, designed by Severiano Ballesteros, is located in an incomparable natural setting. Its wide fairways, edge by oaks and hollies, and the layout of its spectacular holes make playing a round of golf on this course an unforgettable experience.

The Design: By Severiano Ballesteros

Besides being the first, totally public 18-hole golf course (with a further 9 holes) ever built in Spain, designing Izki golf represented an enormous personal challenge for me as it involved laying out the course on abandoned farming land.

From the beginning, I knew that thanks to the splendid setting of woods and mountains, it would be possible to create something really spectacular for the economic and social benefit of this region.

Izki golf is a real example of what a good golf course should be: totally integrated in the local ecosystem and accessible to all kinds of people, this course allows players to get into close contact with nature and the rural milieu.

I am proud to have designed such a magnificent golf complex, especially when one considers everything it represents.
