Golf Vacations in Spain: The Complete Guide

April 4, 2026
·14 min read·DGE Golf Team

Spain is Europe's premier golf destination — not because the marketing says so, but because the math is undeniable. Over 400 courses. Year-round sunshine across three distinct climatic zones. World-ranked courses at prices that still make Pebble Beach look unreasonable. And an infrastructure of five-star resorts specifically designed for golfers.

DGE Golf has been planning golf vacations to Spain since 2007. This guide covers every major region, the courses worth playing, where to stay, and exactly when to go — without the filler.

Why Spain Leads European Golf

  • More than 400 golf courses — highest density per capita in Europe
  • Three distinct climate zones: Andalusia (Mediterranean/subtropical), Canaries (Atlantic subtropical), Balearics (Mediterranean)
  • Home to Valderrama — host of the 1997 Ryder Cup and ranked among Europe's top 5 courses
  • Five-star resort infrastructure built around golf, not just adjacent to it
  • Direct flights from the US to Madrid, Málaga, and Barcelona year-round
  • Green fee prices 30–60% lower than equivalent UK or US courses

Spain's Major Golf Regions

Andalusia & Costa del Sol

The undisputed capital of Spanish golf. Over 70 courses within a 60-minute drive on the Costa del Sol alone. Marbella, Sotogrande, and the surrounding area host some of Europe's most celebrated fairways.

Must-Play Courses

  • Valderrama
  • Real Club de Golf Sotogrande
  • La Reserva Club
  • Real Club de Golf Las Brisas

Where to Stay

Finca Cortesin, Marbella Club, Puente Romano

Best Season

Year-round. Best in spring (March–May) and autumn (Sept–Nov). Summer is hot but playable with early tee times.

Canary Islands

Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote offer world-class resort golf in Europe's warmest winter destination. Volcanic landscapes make for visually dramatic courses.

Must-Play Courses

  • Golf Las Americas
  • Buenavista Golf (Tenerife)
  • Golf Costa Adeje
  • Lanzarote Golf Resort

Where to Stay

Golf Costa Adeje Hotel, Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora

Best Season

Best November–April (Europe's winter). The Canaries avoid mainland Spain's summer heat.

Balearic Islands

Mallorca is the Balearics' golf hub — spectacular coastal courses alongside some of Europe's finest resort hotels. Ibiza offers more casual golf with world-class nightlife nearby.

Must-Play Courses

  • Arabella Golf Mallorca
  • Golf Son Vida
  • Capdepera Golf

Where to Stay

Cap Rocat, Belmond La Residencia, Son Brull

Best Season

April–October optimal. July–August is hot but popular.

Valencian Community

An emerging golf destination with championship-standard courses, excellent infrastructure, and prices noticeably lower than Andalusia. El Saler ranks among Spain's finest public courses.

Must-Play Courses

  • Parador de El Saler
  • Foressos Golf
  • Panoràmic Golf Club

Where to Stay

Parador Nacional de El Saler, Hotel Arts Barcelona (for Catalonia overlap trips)

Best Season

Year-round. Spring and autumn are ideal. Summer is warm but manageable.

When to Go: Spain Golf Calendar

Spain's size means the answer varies by region — but here's the honest breakdown:

March–May

Best overall

Ideal temperatures across all regions, courses in peak condition after winter maintenance, lower crowds than summer.

June–August

Avoid midday play in Andalusia

Extremely hot on the mainland (35–40°C). Early morning tee times only. The Canary Islands are much more comfortable in summer.

September–November

Second-best window

Temperatures drop to ideal playing range (18–25°C). Courses are less busy than spring. Occasional rain in October.

December–February

Canaries only

The mainland is cold and wet. The Canary Islands offer reliable 20°C+ golf throughout European winter.

How Much Does a Golf Vacation in Spain Cost?
