Spain has more golf courses per capita than any other European country, and the south concentrates the very best within a short drive of each other. This guide covers the regions, the courses our clients return to year after year, the resorts worth the premium, and the mistakes that ruin an otherwise perfect golf holiday.
The Four Regions
Costa del Sol & Andalusia
The epicentre of European golf. Valderrama (site of the 1997 Ryder Cup) is the crown jewel — private, but groups can arrange access through a recognised tour operator. Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and La Reserva sit minutes away. Marbella, Estepona, and Benahavís add another 30+ courses within 40 minutes. Year-round sun, world-class hotel infrastructure, and proximity to Málaga airport (25 minutes) make this Spain's easiest destination to plan.
Canary Islands — Tenerife & Gran Canaria
The Canaries offer Europe's only guaranteed winter golf — January tee times in 22°C sunshine. Abama Golf (Tenerife) and Anfi Tauro (Gran Canaria) are our most requested. The volcanic terrain creates dramatic elevation changes unlike anything on the mainland. Direct flights from most European capitals year-round.
Mallorca & the Balearics
Son Gual is Mallorca's standout — a genuine championship test with mountain-to-sea views. T-Golf (formerly Arabella Golf) and Club de Golf Alcanada (on the water) complete a strong 4-day Mallorca circuit. Best from April to October; avoid August for heat and crowds.
Valencian Community
El Saler (Valencia) is the sleeper pick of Spanish golf — a true links course on Mediterranean dunes, public, and consistently ranked in Spain's top 5. El Bosque and Escorpión add parkland variety. Valencia as a city is outstanding for food and culture.

Valderrama — Sotogrande
The closest Europe has to Augusta National in terms of conditioning and prestige. Groups access via member sponsorship or an approved golf tour operator. The par-5 17th is one of the most discussed holes in European golf. Combine with La Reserva (same ownership, stunning course) for a 2-day Sotogrande experience.
Real Club de Golf Las Brisas — Marbella
Host of multiple World Cups of Golf. More accessible than Valderrama but no less impressive. The best-maintained greens on the Costa del Sol and a proper traditional clubhouse experience. Our clients consistently rate it their top Costa del Sol round.
Finca Cortesin — Casares
Host of the Solheim Cup 2023. A short drive from Estepona, Finca Cortesin is the complete luxury golf destination: the course is spectacular, the resort hotel is 5-star, and the spa is among the best in Andalusia. A night or two here elevates any Costa del Sol itinerary significantly.
Abama Golf — Tenerife
Dave Thomas design on volcanic cliffs above the Atlantic. Dramatically different from any course in mainland Spain. The Ritz-Carlton Abama sits on the same estate — this is the Canary Islands' only true golf resort.
Where to Stay
Marbella Club & Puente Romano — Marbella
The two great Marbella beach hotels. Marbella Club for old-world glamour; Puente Romano for the tennis, the restaurants, and the more social atmosphere. Both are 10 minutes from 15+ courses.
La Reserva Club — Sotogrande
On-site course (La Reserva), luxury villas and a beach club on a man-made lake. Best for groups who want privacy, space, and golf without leaving the estate. Also close to Valderrama.
Gran Meliá Don Pepe — Marbella
The most golf-friendly 5-star on the Costa del Sol. Relationships with 20+ nearby clubs, a dedicated golf concierge in-house, and shuttle service to courses. Our preferred base for first-time Spain golf clients.
Practical Planning
When to Go
October to May for the Costa del Sol — summer heat (35°C+) makes midday golf uncomfortable. The Canaries are best November to March. Spring (March–May) offers perfect temperatures, lush fairways after winter rains, and still-reasonable prices before the summer peak.
Getting There
Málaga Airport (AGP) serves the Costa del Sol — 30 minutes to most Marbella hotels. Tenerife South (TFS) for Abama and the southern resorts. Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is 30 minutes from Anfi Tauro. All three airports have direct connections from most of Europe.
Green Fees & Booking
Costa del Sol green fees range from €80 (good municipal courses) to €350+ (Valderrama, La Reserva, Finca Cortesin). Booking 4–8 weeks in advance is sufficient for most courses except the trophy venues. Our concierge handles all tee time logistics.
