Portugal has quietly become the most exciting golf destination in Europe. The Four Regions
The Algarve — Europe's Golf Capital
Thirty-plus championship courses within 60km of Faro airport. The Golden Triangle (Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura) covers Europe's highest concentration of top-100 courses. Monte Rei in the eastern Algarve is newer, less crowded, and arguably the finest course in Portugal. Year-round sunshine (300+ days per year) and excellent resort infrastructure make the Algarve the easiest planning destination in Europe.
Lisbon Coast — Atlantic Links Golf
Penha Longa (Sintra hills, Ritz-Carlton managed) is the Lisbon area's prestige course. Cascais and Estoril add coastal variety. Oitavos Dunes — opened in 2001, immediately ranked in Europe's Top 30 — is the Atlantic links experience that rivals anything in Ireland or Scotland. One hour from Lisbon, it regularly sells out weeks in advance.
The Silver Coast — Portugal's Best-Kept Secret
Royal Óbidos (Praia D'El Rey group) and Bom Sucesso are purpose-built resort courses above dramatic Atlantic cliffs. Far fewer crowds than the Algarve, equally good course quality, and 30% lower green fees. Praia D'El Rey itself regularly appears in European Top 50 rankings. Two hours from Lisbon, ideal as a standalone 3-day trip or extension.
Madeira & the Azores
Palheiro Golf (Madeira) is set in a botanical garden above Funchal — the most visually distinctive course in Portugal. Furnas Golf Club (São Miguel, Azores) plays through geothermal valleys with bubbling hot springs on the course. Both are bucket-list rounds for anyone who has played the standard European circuits.

Quinta do Lago South — Algarve
Host of multiple European Tour events. The South Course was redesigned by Beau Welling and reopened in 2014 — the best version yet of an already iconic venue. Green fees are among Portugal's highest (€250–€350) but the conditioning is immaculate and the experience lives up to the reputation.
Monte Rei Golf & Country Club — Eastern Algarve
Jack Nicklaus Signature design. Opened 2007, now consistently in Portugal's top 3. Semi-private atmosphere, outstanding turf quality, and far fewer visitors than the Golden Triangle. Our most frequently requested Algarve upgrade for clients who have already done Quinta do Lago.
Oitavos Dunes — Cascais
This is the course that surprises everyone. Atlantic dunes, ocean views on 14 holes, Arthur Hills design, and pure links conditions. Portugal's answer to Lahinch or Royal County Down in terms of character. Book at least 4–6 weeks in advance for peak season.
Vale do Lobo Royal — Algarve
The most photographed hole in Portuguese golf: the par-3 16th, playing 200m across Atlantic cliffs to a green perched on the ocean edge. The Royal Course is tighter and more demanding than the Ocean Course. A consistent client favourite.

Conrad Algarve — Quinta do Lago
5-star, directly in the Quinta do Lago estate. The best hotel base for the Golden Triangle circuit — golf shuttle to Quinta do Lago South, North, and Laranjal courses, plus managed access to Vale do Lobo Royal and Ocean. Our most booked Algarve hotel for groups of 6–12.
Bela Vista Hotel & Spa — Portimão
A converted manor house above Praia da Rocha. Character, small-hotel service, and central enough to reach both eastern and western Algarve courses. For clients who prefer boutique over resort.
Penha Longa Resort (Ritz-Carlton) — Sintra
The obvious choice for a Lisbon area trip. On-site Atlantic Championship Course, 45 minutes from Oitavos Dunes, 30 minutes from Cascais. Sintra's UNESCO landscape immediately behind the hotel is a genuine bonus for non-golfers.
Practical Planning
When to Go
March to May and September to November are Portugal's golf seasons — warm, less crowded, lower prices. Summer in the Algarve (July–August) is busy and expensive. Winter (December–February) is mild and very affordable — green fees drop 30–40% and tee times are wide open.
Getting There
Faro Airport (FAO) serves the Algarve — 30–45 minutes to most resorts. Lisbon Airport (LIS) covers the Lisbon Coast and Silver Coast. Both have extensive direct connections from UK, Ireland, Spain, and most European capitals. No visa required for EU, UK, and US citizens.
Green Fees
Algarve green fees: €100–€350 depending on course and season. Silver Coast: €80–€180. Lisbon Coast: €100–€250. Portugal offers genuinely better value than comparable Spanish venues — the same quality trip costs 25–35% less.
