Robert Trent Jones Sr. called it his crowning glory — and it is difficult to argue with the master. The Masterpiece Course at Treetops Resort in Gaylord, Michigan, was Jones's final design in the state, and it bears all the hallmarks of a career spent perfecting the art of strategic design. Positioned at the headwaters of the Pigeon River, the routing moves with rare intelligence through natural valleys, sweeping ravines, and broad open plains, drawing on the land rather than imposing upon it. The signature sixth hole delivers one of the most arresting moments in Michigan golf: a 120-foot vertical drop paired with a panoramic vista of the Pigeon River Valley that arrests the eye and steadies the nerves in equal measure. Among Treetops' celebrated 81 holes, the Masterpiece stands as the one Jones himself considered the finest expression of his life's work.
