Panmure Golf Club – Carnoustie

About Panmure Golf Club – Carnoustie
Golf, or some form of the game as we now know it today, has been played on the links at Barry since the end of the 15th century, Panmure Golf Club has therefore a direct link back to the very earliest days of the game.
Located only 10 miles from Scotland's sunniest city, Dundee, our classic championship links influenced by the famous Old Tom Morris and James Braid requires both strategy and skill whilst offering an enjoyable test for all levels. The course combines the best elements of links and healthland, with tight fairways, challenging carries, undulating greens and sandhills forged by nature.
Situated between the courses of Carnoustie and Monifieth, we are within easy travelling distance from St Andrews and approximately one hour and twenty minutes from Edinburgh airport.
Our Clubhouse is one of the finest old golf buildings in Scotland, it's unique and atmospheric lounges are full of character. Devotees of the history of golf will be interested to know of our origins, borne of the close trading relationship between Dundee and Calcutta in the halcyon days of the Jute Industry. The Clubhouse offers a varied range of dining options, with friendly and attentive staff presenting good food and wine to complete your day.
Our Director of Golf, Andrew Crerar, has a fully stocked shop where quality items to remind you of your day can be purchased. Andrew and his team also operate the driving range and the practice area and offer first class instruction by arrangement.
A warm Scottish welcome awaits to this classic links golfing experience.
Championships
The testing layout has fully merited its roll-call of championships. In particular it has hosted the following events:
Ben Hogan 1912 - 1997
When Ben Hogan came to Carnoustie in the summer of 1953 he was already holder of The Masters" and "The U.S. Open Championship". For this, his only (British) Open Championship appearance, arrangements were made for him to practice at Panmure Golf Club, just two miles to the west, but well away from the busy practice ground at Carnoustie.
At Panmure, only his caddie Cecil Timms accompanied him. After two weeks of rigorous preparation for the Championship, he was familiar with the then smaller British ball and the unforgiving links grasses, which prevented him taking his customary long divot.
Methodical as ever, Hogan taught himself to pick the 1.62 inch ball off the turf. The long hours of practice paid off. He won the Open by four strokes, setting a new Carnoustie course record of 68 for his final round.
Hogan's favourite hole at Panmure was the sixth and he suggested the cleverly-placed hidden pot bunker to the front right of the green. Over fifty years on, the members still refer to it as "Hogan's Bunker". It is a fitting memorial to a champion.
