Nestled in the captivating region of Bordeaux in Southwest France is Cabot Bordeaux, where greens meet grapes, and remarkable memories are par for the course. It is the perfect, secluded setting that offers an ideal blend of luxurious vineyard sophistication with laidback countryside charm. Over the coming year, Cabot will debut a complete reimagining of the former Golf du Médoc Resort and elevate the resort to five-star status worthy of the world’s most prestigious wine landscape. It is the only true golf resort in France where two internationally acclaimed courses by Bill Coore and Rod Whitman proudly feature in Golf World’s Top 100 Courses in Continental Europe. When Bill Coore designed the Châteaux course in 1987, he attempted to build a new course that looked as though Tom Simpson had built it in the 1920s. Simpson had designed outstanding courses in France, perhaps most notably Morfontaine, and Coore wanted to pay homage to his beautiful style of work. Sandy soil, heather-lined bunkers and fast-and-firm fairways make Châteaux a distinctly heathland course, akin to some of the UK’s most famous such as Sunningdale Golf Club and Swinley Forest. Rod Whitman, who helped Bill Coore build Châteaux in 1987, designed the Vignes course two years later with shorter holes, tighter fairways, and more severe greens than its counterpart. Since Whitman prefers links-like conditions and features, Vignes consequently offers a distinctly French experience wrapped with Scottish flavor—many holes are framed with heather, gorse and Junay bushes, and they meander through moores and are framed with towering maritime pines. Whitman believes strongly in giving the golfer options, and strategically placed obstacles throughout the course force the golfer to make decisions, often enticing them into taking the riskier route. The course’s diversity of playing situations provokes strategy and thought, and also makes it as playable for low handicappers as beginners alike. Cabot Bordeaux is located 20 minutes from Bordeaux airport and 40 minutes from Bordeaux Saint-Jean train station.
