Qatar will not compete with Dubai for sheer volume of courses — there are four worth your time, not forty. But what Doha offers is a tighter, more manageable golf trip: every course within 30 minutes of each other, a compact city that is easy to navigate, and a flagship layout that hosts a DP World Tour event every January. If you are going to the Gulf and Dubai feels overplayed, Qatar is the sharper choice.

Outside those months — specifically June through August — average daytime temperatures in Doha exceed 42°C and early-morning rounds are the only realistic option even then. The courses themselves stay open year-round, but visiting outside the cool season is a matter of physical tolerance rather than anything else. For most European golfers, January and February are the sweet spot: the Qatar Masters adds an atmosphere to the trip, green fees are at their highest but the conditions are perfect, and hotel availability is easy to manage if you book eight weeks in advance.
One logistical note before the course breakdown: Qatar is a conservative country and both Al Shaqab and Doha Golf Club enforce dress codes at the clubhouse beyond what you might expect on a typical golf trip. Collared shirts, smart-casual for dinner, no athletic wear in the dining areas. Pack accordingly — it is a minor inconvenience and worth knowing in advance.
Doha Golf Club
The flagship of Qatari golf and the long-time home of the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters on the DP World Tour. Peter Harradine designed this course on what was barren desert scrubland in the mid-1990s, and the transformation is genuinely impressive. Lush fairways bordered by white sand bunkers, mature palm trees, and a lake system that comes into play on nine holes. The closing stretch — holes 15 through 18 — is where the tournament is decided every year: a demanding finishing run that rewards accurate ball-striking over length. Conditioning is maintained at tour standard year-round. Visitor access is well-organised, and the clubhouse is one of the best in the Gulf.
Best for: Anyone visiting Qatar for golf. The one course you cannot miss.
Al Shaqab Golf
Set within the grounds of the Al Shaqab equestrian facility, one of the world's great centres for Arabian horse breeding, this course carries an atmosphere unlike any other in the Middle East. Kyle Phillips — the architect behind Kingsbarns in Scotland — brought a links-influenced sensibility to a desert canvas, with sweeping fairways, deep pot bunkers inspired by the Scottish coast, and greens that run fast and true. The equestrian backdrop is extraordinary; it is not unusual to see horses being exercised on the adjacent track while you play. Premium green fees reflect the premium experience. Dress standards are strictly enforced.
Best for: Serious golfers who want the most distinctive round in Qatar.
Education City Golf Club
The newest of Doha's established courses, built in the heart of the Education City campus that also houses branch universities of Cornell, Georgetown, and Carnegie Mellon. David Spencer's design uses subtle elevation changes and a network of waste areas to create a more naturalistic feel than you might expect from a facilities-driven build. Water hazards guard the approach on six holes, and the par-5 14th — a sweeping dogleg right with a lake running the full length of the right side — is genuinely memorable. Better value than Doha Golf Club and worth including in any multi-round Qatar trip.
Best for: Mid-handicappers looking for value and a less corporate atmosphere.
Doha Golf Club — Reem Course
The Reem is the 9-hole complement to Doha Golf Club's main championship layout, and it deserves more attention than it typically receives. Harradine designed it as a genuine test in its own right: tight fairways, well-placed bunkers, and greens that share the same high maintenance standard as the championship 18. If you have an afternoon free or arrive in Qatar with only a short window, a double loop of the Reem is a smarter use of time than rushing through a full 18 on the main course. Also the most accessible entry point for golfers playing in Qatar for the first time.
Best for: Half-day golf, warm-up rounds, and golfers with limited time in Doha.
How to structure a Qatar golf trip
Four nights is the right length. Arrive on day one, play a late afternoon nine at the Reem Course to adjust to the heat and get your bearings. Day two: Doha Golf Club Championship 18. Day three: Al Shaqab. Day four: Education City. That is three of the four courses on this list at a relaxed pace, leaving time for Doha's genuinely excellent restaurant scene — the city has undergone a transformation in the past decade and the dining is now legitimately world-class.
Accommodation sits in two logical clusters. The West Bay area — luxury hotels like the St Regis, Four Seasons, and Rosewood — puts you closest to Doha Golf Club and is where most tour players stay during the Qatar Masters. The Pearl-Qatar, an artificial island development north of downtown, is quieter and more self-contained, and the drive to the golf courses is under 20 minutes in either direction.
Green fees quoted in this article are rack rates at the 2026 high-season peak. Off-peak (October–November, late February–April) rates run 20–30% lower. All courses accept visitor bookings directly, but tee time availability at Doha Golf Club around the Qatar Masters week in January tightens significantly. If your trip coincides with the tournament, book at least six weeks out or risk playing only practice days when the course is open for members.
Qatar is increasingly popular as a stopover destination for golfers heading to and from Southeast Asia and Australia on long-haul itineraries. Doha's Hamad International Airport is a natural hub — a 48 or 72-hour Qatar Masters-week stopover, two rounds at Doha Golf Club, and onward to Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur makes for an unusually efficient way to combine two golf trips in one journey.
For those considering a wider Gulf golf circuit, Qatar pairs naturally with a subsequent stop in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. All three destinations are within a one-hour flight of each other, making a ten-day Gulf golf trip across all three entirely realistic — and one of the better golf itineraries money can currently buy.
Practical information for visiting golfers
Visa: Citizens of the UK, EU, USA, Australia, and most Western countries receive a free 30-day visa on arrival at Hamad International Airport. Check current requirements before travelling, as Gulf entry rules can update at short notice.
Currency: The Qatari Riyal (QAR) is pegged to the US dollar at approximately 3.64 QAR to 1 USD. Credit cards are accepted universally at golf clubs, hotels, and restaurants. Carry a small amount of cash for minor expenses — tipping at golf clubs is customary though not always expected.
Alcohol: Alcohol is available at licensed hotel bars and restaurants. Golf clubhouses at Doha Golf Club and Al Shaqab serve alcohol to non-Muslim guests. Bring this up if it matters to your group — the hospitality standards are high, but Qatar is not Dubai in terms of nightlife infrastructure.

Flying golf clubs into Doha on Qatar Airways is straightforward — oversized baggage handling at Hamad Airport is efficient, and clubs rarely go missing. Best month to book: January for the Qatar Masters atmosphere and peak conditions. March and April for better availability and slightly lower prices. Avoid May through September unless you have a specific reason to be in Qatar and are prepared to play before 8am.
