Best Golf Courses in the Algarve 2026

Ten courses. One region. The most concentrated collection of championship golf in Europe. Here is every course worth your time, ranked, reviewed, and priced honestly.

The Algarve has more world-class golf courses per square kilometre than any other region in Europe. Within a 40-minute drive of Faro airport, you can play courses designed by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, and Sir Henry Cotton, on land that gets over 300 days of sunshine per year.

I have been planning Algarve golf trips since 2007. In that time I have played every course on this list multiple times and sent thousands of golfers through the region. These rankings reflect real playing experience, not press trips, not sponsored content. Green fees listed are the 2026 high-season rack rates; booking through DGE or timing your trip for shoulder season (October–November or March–April) will reduce these significantly.

The Algarve divides naturally into three zones: the Golden Triangle (Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, San Lorenzo, all within 10 minutes of each other near Almancil), Vilamoura (25 minutes east, five courses clustered around the marina), and the Eastern Algarve (Monte Rei, Castro Marim, 45 minutes east of Faro, quieter and less developed). Planning a logical route between these zones is where most self-organised trips lose a day to unnecessary driving.

01

Quinta do Lago South

Almancil, AlgarvePar 72William Mitchell (redesigned 2014)Green fee: €290–€395

The flagship of the Quinta do Lago estate and arguably the finest course in Portugal. Set within the Ria Formosa Natural Park, South winds through umbrella pine forests along a pristine lagoon. The closing stretch, holes 14 through 18, is as demanding as anything in southern Europe. Immaculate conditioning year-round. The first tee feels like stepping onto a major championship venue.

Best for: Serious golfers wanting the best the Algarve has to offer.

02

Vale do Lobo Royal

Vale do Lobo, AlgarvePar 72Henry Cotton / Rocky BrownGreen fee: €195–€285

The most iconic hole in Portugal is here: the par-3 16th, played across two dramatic ocean cliffs. Royal combines links-influenced exposure with tight, tree-lined parkland holes inland. The wind off the Atlantic turns manageable pins into genuine tests. It photographs beautifully but plays even better, an Algarve essential that rewards repeat visits.

Best for: Golfers who want drama and a bucket-list par-3.

03

Monte Rei Golf & Country Club

Castro Marim, Eastern AlgarvePar 72Jack NicklausGreen fee: €275–€450

The quietest of the top Algarve courses and arguably the most refined. Jack Nicklaus designed Monte Rei on rolling cork and olive tree terrain in the Eastern Algarve, far from the resort crowds of Quinta do Lago. The course has extraordinary width and strategy, with views toward Spain across the Guadiana River valley. Green fees are high because playing numbers are kept deliberately low. Worth every cent.

Best for: Golfers who want solitude and serious design. Best combined with a stay at the on-site hotel.

04

Vilamoura Victoria

Vilamoura, AlgarvePar 71Arnold Palmer DesignGreen fee: €130–€195

Host of the Portugal Masters on the DP World Tour for over a decade. Victoria is the most tour-ready course in the Algarve, wide, long, and spectator-friendly but genuinely challenging from the back tees. Arnold Palmer's team built in generous landing zones but punishing rough and fast greens. Excellent value compared to Quinta or Monte Rei, and the Vilamoura marina location makes it easy to combine with the town's restaurants and nightlife.

Best for: Mid-to-low handicappers. Groups who want a tour venue without the top-tier price.

05

Quinta do Lago Laranjal

Almancil, AlgarvePar 72Beau WellingGreen fee: €155–€235

The newest of the three Quinta do Lago courses, opened 2014. Laranjal takes a completely different character from South and North, more inland, through citrus groves and cork oaks, with less water and more elevation change. It plays firmer and faster. A welcome contrast if you're doing a Quinta do Lago two- or three-day package. Less lauded than South but increasingly favoured by golfers who prefer strategy over spectacle.

Best for: Second or third round for golfers doing a Quinta do Lago package.

06

Vale do Lobo Ocean

Vale do Lobo, AlgarvePar 72Henry Cotton / Rocky BrownGreen fee: €150–€210

Ocean is the more approachable sibling to Royal, but that's relative, it still plays over clifftops and through dense pine. The signature hole is the par-4 6th, a blind drive over a ridge to a green set above the Atlantic. Better for mid-handicappers than Royal, though it loses nothing in terms of scenery. Sharing the Vale do Lobo estate with Royal makes a two-round day easy to arrange.

Best for: Higher handicappers visiting the Vale do Lobo estate.

07

Quinta do Lago North

Almancil, AlgarvePar 72William MitchellGreen fee: €120–€175

North shares the Ria Formosa lagoon setting with South but plays softer and more forgiving. The oldest of the three Quinta do Lago courses, it retains a classic feel, wide fairways through umbrella pines, minimal forced carries, receptive greens. Ideal for groups with a range of handicaps. The value relative to South makes it a smart choice for a day two or three round.

Best for: Groups with mixed handicaps. Good-value Quinta do Lago experience.

08

San Lorenzo

Quinta do Lago Estate, AlgarvePar 72Joe Lee / Rocky BrownGreen fee: €195–€275

For years San Lorenzo was the most exclusive course in the Algarve, available only to guests of the Le Méridien Dona Filipa Hotel. Now bookable as a non-guest, it remains one of the finest layouts in Portugal. Holes 6 and 7 play alongside the Ria Formosa lagoon with water on three sides. The pace is unhurried, the conditioning exceptional, and the finishing holes back toward the clubhouse are genuinely beautiful.

Best for: Golfers who want exclusivity and a links-meets-parkland feel in one round.

09

Penina Championship

Portimão, AlgarvePar 73Sir Henry CottonGreen fee: €85–€140

Portugal's first purpose-built golf course, designed by three-time Open Champion Sir Henry Cotton in 1966. Penina is flat, it sits on reclaimed rice paddy land, but Cotton created interest through over 350 trees planted across the estate and a demanding par-73 layout. It hosted the Portuguese Open multiple times. More relaxed and less scenic than the top-tier courses but full of history and excellent value, especially in shoulder season.

Best for: Golf history lovers. Groups on tighter budgets who don't want to compromise on course quality.

10

Oceanico O'Brien (Faldo)

Vilamoura, AlgarvePar 72Nick FaldoGreen fee: €95–€155

Nick Faldo's Algarve design is more challenging than its mid-tier price suggests. Tight tree-lined fairways, subtle elevation changes, and slick greens reward precision rather than power. Not the most photogenic course in the region but consistently ranked among the better-value rounds in Vilamoura. A good choice for an extra day when staying in the area.

Best for: Golfers adding a day to a Vilamoura-based trip who want a challenge without the flagship price.

How to plan your Algarve golf trip

A well-structured Algarve golf trip plays 5–6 rounds over 7 days. The biggest mistake is booking too many different base hotels, move once at most. Stay in the Golden Triangle area (Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura are all within 20 minutes) and you can reach every course on this list without a taxi costing more than €30.

The best months are October, November, March, and April. Green fees drop 30–40% compared to peak summer, courses are less busy, and temperatures sit between 18–24°C, ideal playing conditions. July and August are perfectly playable but expect higher prices, busier tee sheets, and afternoon heat that makes the back nine a different game entirely.

For groups of 4–8, booking tee times individually across Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, and Vilamoura can take days of back-and-forth. A golf travel specialist handles all tee times, transfers, and accommodation in one call, and typically accesses preferred rates that are hard to get independently.
